Understanding Orgasmic Disorder

Orgasmic disorder refers to the condition where a woman experiences significantly blunted or absent orgasms. This issue affects up to 15% of women and can stem from various causes including hormonal changes, aging, relationship difficulties, medications, substance abuse, and underlying medical conditions.

Causes of Orgasmic Disorder

  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly during menopause or other life stages, can impact sexual function.
  • Aging: Natural aging processes can affect sexual response.
  • Relationship Difficulties: Emotional and psychological factors within relationships can play a significant role.
  • Medications: Certain medications, particularly antidepressants, can inhibit orgasm.
  • Substance Abuse: Alcohol and drug use can negatively impact sexual function.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and others can interfere with sexual response.

Understanding Normal Orgasmic Experiences

It’s important to recognize that many women may incorrectly self-diagnose orgasmic disorder. Understanding what is typical for most women can help in identifying whether there is an actual disorder or simply a misdiagnosis.

Helpful Facts

  • Clitoral Stimulation: Approximately 80% of women do not orgasm from penile-vaginal intercourse (PIV) alone. Most women require direct or indirect clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm.
  • Orgasm Latency: This refers to the time it takes from the start of sexual activity to climax. On average, women take about 14 minutes of clitoral stimulation during partnered sex to reach orgasm, and about 8 minutes during solo masturbation.
