Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a common and minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate and treat abnormal uterine bleeding. It involves the use of a small scope, called a hysteroscope, which is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. This allows your healthcare provider to view the inside of the uterus and identify any abnormalities.
How is a Hysteroscopy Performed?
- Insertion of Scope: A hysteroscope is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
- Inflation of Uterus: Sterile fluid is used to inflate the uterus, providing a clear view of the uterine cavity.
- Evaluation and Treatment: The procedure allows for both the evaluation and treatment of conditions causing abnormal uterine bleeding.
Preparation and Recovery
- Preoperative Medication: Medications are given before the procedure to help minimize discomfort.
- Transportation: You will need a driver to take you to and from the procedure, as the medications may impair your ability to drive.
- Activity Restrictions: Do not schedule any other appointments or activities on the day of your hysteroscopy.
- Post-Procedure: You can typically resume normal activities the following day.

Importance of Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a valuable tool for diagnosing and treating causes of abnormal uterine bleeding, such as polyps, fibroids, or other uterine abnormalities. It provides a clear and direct view of the uterine cavity, allowing for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
